What Baptists believe and why!
These notes are a study of some of the important, basic beliefs that Baptist believers have believed for many years. We will use the acrostic “B-A-P-T-I-S-T-S” to help us in remembering these important Bible based beliefs of the Baptists. Below is a listing of those beliefs. Then in the following pages there are explanations of each.
B iblical Authority
A utonomy of the Local Church
P riesthood of all believers
T wo Ordinances
I ndividual Soul Liberty
S aved, Baptized Church Membership
T wo Officers
B iblical Authority: The BIBLE, God’s Word, is our only basis and authority for BOTH faith and practice.
II Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
See also – Matthew 4:4
A utonomy of the Local Church: Each individual local church is responsible to God alone without control by any other local church, ecclesiastical organization or outside agency.
II Timothy 3:15 “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
See also – Ephesians 1:22; 4:15; 5:23-27; Colossians 1:18, Revelation 1:10-13; 1:16; 1:19-20; chapters 2 and 3
P riesthood of all believers: Baptists believe that every Christian has the privilege of direct access to God through Jesus Christ without a need for a human mediator.
1 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
See also – Revelation 1:5-6; Hebrews 2:17; 3:1; 4:14-15
T wo Ordinances: We believe that an Ordinance is something “ordered” by Christ and “set in order” by Christ in the Bible. The only two such “orders” relate to baptism and The Lord’s Supper.
Acts 2:41-42 “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
I ndividual Soul Liberty: We believe that God created man with a right to make his own decisions. Whether his decisions are right or wrong, man has full responsibility for the decisions he makes.
Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
See also – Acts 10:34
S aved, Baptized Church Membership: We believe that the “pattern” for local church membership is 1st SALVATION, 2nd BAPTISM BY IMMERSION and then CHURCH MEMBERSHIP.
Acts 2:41 “Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”
T wo Officers: We believe that the only two church officers revealed in the Bible are the Pastor and the Deacons(s). We further believe that the Pastor is the leader of the church and the Deacon(s) are servants of the church.
Philippians 1:1 “Paul and Timotheus the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.”
See also – Ephesians 4:11
S eparation: We believe that God expects His children to separate themselves from sin and from churches that fail to follow the FAITH andPRACTICE of the Bible. We further believe in the “separation of church and state”.
